What this article covers

Road and wayfinding signs are used to guide people and vehicles on private roads, private land, and within commercial or residential areas. This article covers what we can and cannot produce, material selection, best practice, and market-specific notes for all markets.

Critical distinction: Official road traffic signs on public roads are regulated by law in all markets and must be produced and installed by authorised parties. Our signs are not produced to official road traffic standards (such as EN 12899-1) and do not carry any regulatory certification.

Agents must always inform the customer of this — clearly and proactively — before quoting. It is ultimately the customer's decision whether to proceed, and we will produce the sign if they choose to do so. Never assume the customer is aware of this limitation.

Private vs official road signs — what we produce

Not a good fit when the customer needs:

Signs certified to EN 12899-1 or any other road traffic standard → we cannot produce certified signs; refer to a specialist supplier

Material selection — quick guide

Best practice — general

Always inform the customer that our signs are not certified to road traffic standards — this must be communicated proactively, before quoting, for any sign that resembles an official road traffic sign (speed limits, stop, give way, etc.). Explain clearly that we do not produce signs certified to EN 12899-1 or any equivalent national standard. It is the customer's decision whether to proceed — we will produce the sign if they choose to — but they must make that decision with full awareness of the limitation. Never assume they already know.
Reflective aluminium is the standard for road signs — for any road sign that will be used at night or in low light conditions, reflective aluminium is the default recommendation. If the customer requires maximum reflectivity at distance (RA2 class), prismatic material is available as a special order with a minimum order value of SEK 5,000 — see the Prismatic Signs — Special Material Guide.
Pole mounting is standard for road signs — most road signs are pole-mounted for visibility. Confirm whether the customer needs screw holes and what pole diameter they are using. For Gobond, Solid PET or shaped signs that cannot be bent, aluminium strips are used as a workaround — see the Pole Attachment - Fixing Method.
Size depends on viewing distance and speed — a sign on a 5 mph private yard road can be small; a sign on a 30 mph private estate road needs to be significantly larger for safe readability. Ask about the environment and typical vehicle speed before recommending a size.
Keep designs simple and high contrast — road and wayfinding signs must be read quickly, often by moving vehicles. Large text, simple symbols, and high contrast colours are essential. Avoid decorative fonts or complex graphics.
Use familiar colour conventions — while private signs do not need to follow official colour standards, using familiar conventions improves readability: white/blue for information and direction, red/white for prohibition, yellow/black for warnings, green/white for destination wayfinding.
Speed limit signs on private land — these are legally enforceable on private land in most markets if properly signed and the landowner has the right to enforce. We produce the sign; the customer is responsible for ensuring their speed management scheme meets applicable requirements.

Common use cases

Private road identification — "Private Road", "No Through Road", "Access Only" signs at entrances to private roads, farms, and residential developments. Reflective aluminium pole-mounted signs are standard.
Speed limit signs on private land — common on industrial estates, business parks, farms, and private roads. Reflective aluminium is the default — prismatic for high-speed or maximum visibility requirements. Always inform the customer that these are not certified to road traffic standards.
Industrial estate and business park wayfinding — directional signs to reception, loading bays, car parks, and specific units. Standard printed aluminium is sufficient for well-lit areas.
Farm and rural signs — field names, track identification, livestock warnings, private land boundaries. Reflective aluminium recommended for unlit rural roads.
Residential estate internal signs — road names within private residential developments, visitor directions, speed limit reminders. Reflective aluminium for roads used at night.
Hospitality and leisure venues — car park direction, entrance/exit signs, speed limit reminders in hotel and restaurant car parks. Standard printed aluminium for well-lit areas.
Construction site signs — access control, speed limits, directional signs for deliveries. Standard aluminium or Solid PET depending on lifespan needed.

Market-specific notes

Sweden

Official road traffic signs on public roads must follow Vägmärkesförordningen (VMF) and can only be installed by municipalities or authorised parties. Our signs do not meet VMF requirements.
Signs on private roads (enskilda vägar) do not require regulatory approval — these are the signs we produce. Private roads in Sweden are common in rural and residential areas managed by vägföreningar (road associations).
Vägföreningar and samfällighetsföreningar are a common customer segment — they frequently order speed limit signs, road name signs, and access restriction signs for privately maintained road networks. Reflective aluminium is the standard recommendation. Always inform these customers that the signs are not certified to official road traffic standards.
Common Swedish terminology: privat väg, enskild väg, genomfart förbjuden, privat mark, hastighetsbegränsning.

United Kingdom

Official road traffic signs on public roads must comply with the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD). Our signs are not TSRGD-compliant.
Signs on private land are freely customisable. Speed limit signs on private land are enforceable under the Road Traffic Act if properly signed — the customer is responsible for ensuring their speed management complies with applicable law.
UK customers frequently ask about speed limit signs and "Private Road" signs for private estates, business parks, and residential developments. Reflective aluminium is the standard recommendation. Always inform the customer that the signs are not certified to official standards before quoting.
Road name signs for private residential developments (unadopted roads) are a common request and are freely customisable.

Germany

Official road traffic signs (Verkehrszeichen) on public roads are regulated by the Straßenverkehrsordnung (StVO). Our signs are not StVO-compliant.
Signs on Privatgelände (private property) are freely customisable and do not require regulatory approval — these are the signs we produce.
Common German customer segments include Gewerbegebiete (industrial estates), Logistikzentren (logistics centres), and private Wohnanlagen (residential developments). Reflective aluminium is the standard recommendation for road signs. Always inform the customer that the signs are not certified to official standards.
Speed limit signs (Tempolimit-Schilder) on private property are popular — always inform the customer that these are not StVO-compliant before quoting.
