When to recommend it
Good fit when the customer needs:
- Permanent identification on machinery or equipment
- Labels that resist chemicals, heat, or mechanical wear
- Long-term outdoor or industrial signage
- Rating plates or nameplates with technical specifications
- Asset labels for traceability or compliance
Not a good fit when the customer needs:
- Full colour graphics or photographic print → recommend Printed Aluminium or Decals
- Temporary or removable labelling → recommend Decals
- Low-cost indoor signage → recommend Engraved Plastic or Solid PET

Best practice — general

Always ask about the environment — indoor vs outdoor, temperature range, chemical or oil exposure, and mechanical wear all determine which material is correct. Never recommend a material without knowing the environment.

Engraved or etched over printed for harsh environments — if the label will be exposed to chemicals, solvents, or high temperatures, always recommend laser engraved aluminium, or stainless steel over printed materials. Printing can fade or peel; engraving is permanent.

Decals for difficult surfaces — if the customer needs to label curved, round, or uneven surfaces where a rigid sign will not sit flat, decals are a strong option. Standard decals are UV-resistant and waterproof, making them suitable for outdoor industrial use. For chemically aggressive environments, etched materials are still preferred.

Fixing method matters — adhesive tape works well on clean, flat, indoor surfaces. For outdoor, industrial, or high-vibration environments, screw mounting or rivets are more reliable. Cable tie holes are a common option for equipment labelling — see the Cable Tags article for specs.

Keep designs simple — industrial labels are functional, not decorative. Clear sans-serif fonts, high contrast, and minimal clutter ensure readability over time. Avoid fine details or thin lines on engraved materials — minimum line thickness is 0.2 mm for engraved plastic.

QR codes work well on engraved materials — stainless steel and laser engraved aluminium both produce readable QR codes. Barcodes can be more difficult — always recommend a test sign for larger orders before confirming.
- Size series orders — for customers ordering large volumes of sequentially numbered labels (serial numbers, asset tags), confirm the numbering format before quoting.

Rating plates (Typenschilder) — identification plates showing CE marking, voltage, serial numbers, and compliance information. Stainless steel or laser engraved aluminium for permanent outdoor/industrial use.

Labels on curved or irregular surfaces — pipes, cylinders, tanks, and other non-flat surfaces. Decals are the best option here — flexible, UV-resistant, and waterproof.

Market-specific notes
Sweden
- Commonly referred to as industriskyltar or märkskyltar. Customers often ask specifically about graverade skyltar (engraved signs) for machine and equipment labelling.
- Cable tie holes are a common request for electrical and industrial labels.
United Kingdom
- Commonly referred to as industrial labels or rating plates. Traffolyte is a specific type of engraved plastic historically used in UK industrial settings — our engraved plastic is a direct equivalent and fully suitable for the same applications.
- UK customers in electrical and utilities industries often need IEC or BS-standard colour coding on labels — always confirm colour requirements before quoting.
- For very high durability requirements (offshore, marine, or high-temperature), stainless steel is the recommended default.
Germany
- Commonly referred to as Typenschilder, Industrieschilder, or Kennzeichnungsschilder. Typenschilder specifically refers to rating plates with manufacturer, serial number, CE marking, and technical specifications.
- German industrial customers frequently require CE-compliant rating plates — we can produce the label, but we cannot certify compliance. Always clarify that the customer is responsible for ensuring the content meets any applicable regulatory requirements.
- For machine manufacturers (Maschinenbauer), stainless steel or laser engraved aluminium are the standard recommendations for outdoor and production-floor environments.
