Floor Decals — Product Guide

Internal · Updated July 2026

What this article covers

Floor decals are self-adhesive signs applied directly to floor surfaces. They are used for wayfinding, safety marking, branding, and zone marking in commercial, industrial, and public environments. This article covers material selection, best practice, and market-specific notes for all markets.

When to recommend it

Good fit when the customer needs:

  • Directional arrows or wayfinding on floors
  • Safety zone marking or hazard warnings on floors
  • Branded floor graphics in retail, hospitality, or events
  • Social distancing or queuing markers
  • Step or stair marking
  • Temporary or semi-permanent floor signage

Not a good fit when the customer needs:

  • Outdoor floor marking → floor decals are not recommended for outdoor use
  • Very large floor graphics → check production size limits before quoting
  • Textured, porous, or damp surfaces → adhesion will be unreliable

Floor decals are the only decal variant that includes anti-slip laminate — this is mandatory and always included. They are designed to withstand foot traffic on smooth indoor surfaces. For standard wall, window, or vehicle graphics, see the Decals — Product Guide article instead.

Best practice — general

  • Always ask about the surface — floor decals perform well on smooth, clean, dry indoor surfaces such as tiles, sealed concrete, vinyl, laminate, and smooth painted floors. Textured, porous, or damp surfaces will cause adhesion failure.

  • Anti-slip laminate is always included — it is not optional and cannot be removed. Never quote a floor decal without it.

  • Surface preparation is the customer's responsibility — the floor must be clean, dry, and free of grease, dust, or wax before application. Poor surface preparation is the most common cause of adhesion failure and is not covered by claims.

  • High-traffic areas have limited lifespan — in very high-traffic areas such as busy retail, warehouses, or transport hubs, floor decals are semi-permanent, not permanent. Set realistic expectations with the customer about lifespan.

  • Cleaning products can damage the laminate — aggressive cleaning agents, abrasive mops, or high-pressure washing will shorten the lifespan significantly. The customer should use mild, non-abrasive cleaning products.

  • Keep designs simple and high contrast — floor graphics are viewed from above, often at a distance or in motion. Simple shapes, large text, and high contrast colours work best. Fine details and small text are difficult to read underfoot.

  • Safety-critical applications — if the customer is using floor decals for safety marking, always clarify that our floor decals are not certified safety products and do not replace mandatory safety floor marking required by local regulations. The customer is responsible for ensuring compliance.

Common use cases

  • Retail wayfinding and branding — directional arrows, brand logos, and promotional graphics on shop floors. Common in supermarkets, clothing stores, and shopping centres.
  • Social distancing and queuing markers — footprint graphics, "stand here" markers, and queue line indicators. Still commonly ordered for pharmacies, banks, post offices, and service counters.
  • Industrial and warehouse safety zones — hazard zone marking, pedestrian walkway indicators, and loading area boundaries. For very long lifespan requirements, mention that more permanent floor marking solutions may be more appropriate.
  • Events and exhibitions — temporary branded floor graphics for trade shows, exhibitions, and events. Floor decals are ideal for short-term use on smooth exhibition hall floors.
  • Hospitality and hotels — branded floor graphics in lobbies, corridors, and entrance areas.
  • Stairs and step marking — safety stripes or step identification markers on smooth stair surfaces. Confirm that the surface is smooth and set clear expectations about lifespan in high-traffic stair environments.

Market-specific notes

Sweden

  • Commonly referred to as golvdekaler or golvskyltar. Demand is consistent year-round in retail and industrial segments.
  • Swedish workplace safety regulations (Arbetsmiljöverket) require specific floor marking in industrial and warehouse environments — always clarify that our floor decals are not certified safety products. Customers with regulatory requirements should consult their safety officer.

United Kingdom

  • Floor decals are widely used in UK retail, hospitality, and healthcare environments. Social distancing floor graphics remain a common order type.
  • UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines require adequate slip resistance for floor surfaces in workplaces. Our anti-slip laminate provides a degree of slip resistance, but we cannot certify that the product meets specific HSE slip resistance ratings. If a customer asks about slip resistance certification, explain that we do not provide this and they should consult a specialist supplier for certified safety flooring products.

Germany

  • Commonly referred to as Bodenaufkleber or Bodenschilder. Demand is strong in retail and logistics environments.
  • German workplace safety regulations (DGUV) have specific requirements for floor marking in industrial environments. Our floor decals are not certified safety products — make this clear if the customer is ordering for a regulated industrial environment.
