Vinyl Lettering — Product Guide

Internal · Updated June 2026

What it is

Vinyl lettering is one of Signmax's cut adhesive sign materials. It is plotter-cut from one coloured vinyl film and applied using transfer tape, giving a clean appearance with no visible background. Vinyl lettering works both indoors and outdoors and is the go-to material when the customer wants text, numbers, or simple graphics without a printed background.

When to recommend it

Good fit when the customer needs:

  • Text or lettering without a background
  • Window or wall lettering
  • Vehicle lettering or branding
  • Opening hours signage
  • Simple one-colour logos or graphics

Not a good fit when the customer needs:

  • Full colour graphics or photos → recommend Decals
  • Gradients or complex designs → recommend Decals
  • Printed backgrounds → recommend Decals or printed sign materials

Vinyl lettering is thin, flexible, and easy to apply. The material is UV-protected and durable for long-term outdoor use. It is plotter-cut from solid-colour vinyl — no printing is involved, which means it supports solid colours only. Full colour graphics, gradients, and photographic images are not possible with this material. Best results are achieved on smooth, clean, and flat surfaces.

Available colours

White, black, blue, red, green, yellow, grey, orange, gold, and silver.

Custom colours may be possible for larger projects — confirm with production before quoting.

Custom options

Most vinyl lettering requests can be handled through the standard assortment. Custom requests may include:

  • Special colours — colours outside the standard range may be possible for larger branding projects. Confirm with production before quoting.

  • Multicolour vinyl — when a customer wants cut-out vinyl in multiple colours, this is handled by creating a decal order with a note to production specifying that it should be cut out as vinyl. See the Special Routine article for full details on how to handle this.

  • Long-term outdoor vinyl — alternative vinyl types with extra durability for demanding outdoor applications. Confirm with production before quoting.

Always confirm custom options with production before quoting. Never estimate prices for custom requests without checking first.

Common use cases

  • Window lettering — clean and professional text applied directly to glass. Works well for opening hours, company names, and storefront branding.

  • Wall text — popular for office interiors, reception areas, and brand statements applied directly to walls.

  • Vehicle lettering — durable UV-protected vinyl for car, van, and fleet branding. Long outdoor lifespan.

  • Door and office signage — simple and professional text for door signs, room labels, and office interiors.

  • Directional and wayfinding text — clean cut-out lettering for directional signs applied to walls, floors, or glass.

Sustainability

Vinyl lettering is produced in Germany with a CO2e of 1.19 kg per m². The material is UV-protected and designed for long-term outdoor use, which reduces how often it needs to be replaced.
